JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. (June 27, 2007) – Northeast Florida golf courses have always been well known for their location. Now, thanks to the addition of Global Positioning System technology, or GPS, many area courses are helping golfers find their location on the course. Golfers will still need to find their own ball first.
Golf courses throughout Florida’s First Coast are adding GPS as the newest amenity to enhance a player’s round. The sophisticated technology improves the playing experience by more than just providing yardage distances. It also allows golfers to see tips from the club pro and order food and beverages.
“From the player’s perspective, they love GPS because it truly adds to the game,” explained David Reese, president of Florida’s First Coast of Golf. “They play quicker and they have more information at the touch of a button. It gives them the opportunity to improve their club selection and hit better shots.”
Currently, golfers will find GPS at Amelia Island Plantation’s Long Point, Oak Marsh and Ocean Links courses, along with The Golf Club at North Hampton, World Golf Village’s Slammer & Squire and King & Bear courses, St. Johns Golf & Country Club, The Golf Club at South Hampton, Pine Course at the Grand Club, The Club at Grand Haven, The Conservatory at Ginn Hammock Beach Resort, and Osprey Cove. Royal Amelia expects to add the technology in the coming months.
Florida’s First Coast of Golf offers a selection of more than 30 golf courses and 16 hotels and resorts to choose from. Courses feature layouts ranging from ocean links to pine forest, designed by the greats like Pete Dye, Tom Fazio, Bobby Weed, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Donald Ross. Accommodation styles range from deluxe hotel rooms to ocean villas to four-bedroom golf course homes. In addition to golf, vacationers can take advantage of spa experiences, beach time, water sports, nature activities or simply lounging by a sparkling blue pool.
