When planning for that perfect family vacation, visions of white sandy beaches, clear blue water, and beautiful oceanside resorts often come to mind.  Throw in a couple of championship caliber golf courses and you have the perfect vacation for any occasion.  Now you might think that you’re going to have to book flights to somewhere in the Caribbean or maybe even Hawaii, but you don’t have to look any further than Florida’s First Coast for this perfect vacation destination.

Located about an hour south of Jacksonville, the Hammock Beach Resort has everything a vacationer could want in a resort. Beach access, pools, kayaking -- whether you’re taking the whole family or just planning a romantic weekend --  there are countless activities that make for a beautiful vacation getaway in Northeast Florida.  And we haven’t even gotten to the golf courses that call Hammock Beach home.

In a previous post, we toured the beautiful Conservatory Course designed by Tom Watson, so today the focus will be on the seaside Ocean Course.  The Ocean Course at Hammock Beach would be a must play just for the scenic backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean, but the Jack Nicholas designed course is also a work of art itself.

Playing just over 7,200 yards from the back tees, the Ocean Course is a wonderful test for players looking for a challenge, but also has the variety of tee boxes for those that might be looking for a relaxing and fun day out on the links. Elevated greens, intelligently placed bunkers and water hazards that demand accuracy, all culminate in what is sure to be a great round of golf.

Take for example, the dogleg par-4 fifth.  Playing 434 yards from the back tees, the hole is by no means short.  What compounds the difficulty is the lateral water hazard running down the left side of the fairway.  Not only is an accurate tee shot required, but it must be on the correct line as well.  Players who get over ambitious in trying to cut off the corner can easily find themselves in the water.  You’ll also run into this same type of layout on both the par-4 eleventh and sixteenth, holes that demand similar accuracy off the tee.

There are also a number of holes that challenge players with length.  Officially playing as the number one handicap, a par on the ocean side 468 yard par-4 is definitely a good score.  Similarly, the 551 yard par-5 fourteenth and up-hill 450 yard par-4 fifteenth combine to make for a beautiful, albeit difficult, two hole stretch on the back nine.

With the round finishing up in front of the clubhouse, you can complete your round with a refreshing beverage and snack at the beachside restaurant and bar overlooking the Atlantic.  Needless to say, a round of golf at the Ocean Course at Hammock Beach is perfect for any vacation getaway.  Be it a trip for the whole family, or a golf weekend, the Hammock Beach Resort has everything to offer by way of fun and relaxation.
