Golf Tips & Insights from This North Hampton Pro

Are you wondering what golf is like in Northeast Florida, or are you curious to learn more about a course recognized by many as the best Arnold Palmer golf course in the state? Maybe you’re looking for some tips as a new player to the game. Any way you slice it, this interview will give you some good information.

Blaze Grinn, PGA - Director of Golf for The Golf Club at North Hampton in Fernandina Beach, FL, shares some pro tips and insights with Florida’s First Coast of Golf (FFCG).

Take a look.

FFCG: What are your five best golf tips for the novice player?

Blaze:

1. See a professional for starting points and etiquette.

2. Don’t buy a full set.

3. Practice with a purpose.

4. Putt around the house on a carpet.

5. Enjoy the challenges, the scenery, the company and the tradition.

FFCG: What are some of your secrets to a good golf swing?

Blaze: Hit the ground in the right spot. Play whatever shot you feel comfortable with. Manage your risks!

FFCG: What clubs do you recommend newcomers have when first starting?

Blaze: A driver, 2 hybrids, 5,7,9, pitching wedge, sand wedge and putter. Fill in clubs as you get more speed.

FFCG: What are your top golf hacks for improving your game?

Blaze: Take a lesson. Quick tips are named that because they stop working...quick.

FFCG: What are some of your go-to gadgets and equipment?

Blaze: A decent Bluetooth speaker, a cool divot repair tool, mallet putters and comfortable shoes.

FFCG: Course conditions are important to golfers. What are some unique things about The Golf Club at North Hampton?

Blaze: We are in the process of a bunker renovation to be completed in 2019. The front nine and some significant back nine bunkers have already been completed. We strive to be good stewards to a wonderful Arnold Palmer Signature design, which is unique to the area.

FFCG: What can golfers expect with the club’s green fees? Food & beverage? Staff service? Ease of scheduling tee times?

Blaze: 10-minute tee times allow for a good pace of play, where golfers won’t feel bunched up on the first tee. We feel our pricing is a value for the level of service and course conditions we provide. Tee times can be booked through our website, over the phone, or on a few third-party booking sites as well.

FFCG: What are a few of your other favorite courses to play in the area?

Blaze: Atlantic Beach Country Club and San Jose Country Club offer two widely different layouts and sets of challenges.

FFCG: Favorite holes?

Blaze: I’m always a fan of short par 4s such as #5 and #10 here at North Hampton—so many options for playing them.

FFCG: Why do you love to golf in Northeast Florida?

Blaze: I love to play anywhere, but Northeast Florida is full of great golf and is a hub for a wide range of travel from Georgia, South Carolina and Northwest Florida.
